AHMEDABAD: Taking a leaf out of the private sector, the city police have decided that 'plum postings' will be given to only those personnel who excel in discharge of duty. Those adjudged 'best policemen' will be posted in the much-coveted city crime branch, prevention of crime branch and special operations group.
On Monday, a notice issued by the city police commissioner was seen at various city police stations. The notice said that policemen who excel in detection of crimes like murder, theft, loot, possession of illegal arms and narcotic substances and terrorist activities, will get postings in any of these agencies [city crime branch, prevention of crime branch and special operations group]. "Policemen who show bravery and intelligence in dispensing their duties will be given priority in transfers and postings at these branches of the city police," the notice said.
A senior police official of the city said that these police agencies are quite popular among junior policemen - especially constables and head constables - because of the name and fame associated with these units. "The work of these agencies is focused and needs expertise in certain fields of crime detection. The recognition that accrues to policemen who succeed in getting into these agencies is much higher than that of other postings," said the official.
Recommendation from political parties and leaders also played an important role in transfer and posting of policemen.
However, recently, the city police commissioner disbanded the PCB. "There used to be several complaints against PCB staff. Their output too was quite dismal," said another senior police official.
