MUMBAI: After well over five decades in public life, Maratha strongman Sharad Pawar will bid adieu to active politics and enter the house of elders. The 73-year-old Pawar said on Friday that the decision was a conscious one.
Immediately after Pawar's election to the Lok Sabha from Madha constituency in 2009, he had declared that soon he would quit electoral politics and would prefer to contest the Upper House polls.
Accompanied by a team of senior NCP leaders, Pawar on Friday filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha.
Along with Pawar, leading criminal lawyer Abdul Majeed Memon and industrialist Rajkumar Dhoot also filed their nomination papers for the February 7 elections to the Rajya Sabha.
The Shiv Sena has re-nominated Dhoot, while Memon is a candidate of the NCP. Independent candidate and Pune builder Sanjay Kakade filed his nomination on Thursday. The Congress and BJP are expected to declare their nominees in a day or two.
Hussain Dalwai and Murali Deora of the Congress, Y P Trivedi and Janardan Waghmare of the NCP), Prakash Jawdekar of the BJP, and Bharat Kumar Raut and Rajkumar Dhoot are the retiring members.
The Congress and NCP have declared that they will not field a third candidate. If the BJP and Shiv Sena do not field a second candidate, then the elections will be unopposed. On their own strength, the Congress and the NCP are sure to retain two seats each, while the Shiv Sena and the BJP will secure a seat each. In such an event, Kakade has a chance to win the poll.
