Hindustan Unilever promoters fined Rs 50 lakh by Sebi for violating norms...

MUMBAI: India's capital market regulator Sebi has fined Anglo-Dutch consumer goods giant Unilever Plc for not sharing information on time with public shareholders and market participants.

The regulator in its show cause notice to the promoters of HUL alleged that they had failed to file disclosures before the due date, which is on or before April 21 every year.

US says 92 nuclear officers tied to cheating scandal!!!

WASHINGTON: The US Air Force said on Thursday that 92 nuclear missile officers are now implicated in a widening scandal over cheating on exams as officials cited "systemic problems" in the force.
In the latest setback for the troubled nuclear mission, Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James said she returned from a visit to missile bases believing the cheating was part of a broader morale problem among launch officers.
"As the investigation has moved forward, we can now report there is a total of 92 crew members that have been identified as having some level of involvement," James told a news conference.
"That means either participating in the cheating or knowing something about it and not standing up and reporting it," she said.
Two weeks ago, officials said 34 officers were implicated at Malmstrom Air Force base in Montana.
The latest tally of 92 launch officers ensnared by the scandal represents about half of the total 190-member officer corps of the Montana base, and nearly 20 percent of the roughly 500 officers who run the missile force.
The mounting scandal, as well as other embarrassing incidents, have prompted commanders to put a hold on any promotions of senior officers in the nuclear mission, a defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
"They're reviewing all of those (proposed promotions)," the official said.
While acknowledging serious questions about the working climate and leadership of the nuclear force, James reiterated the Pentagon's stance that the destructive weapons were in safe, competent hands.
"I remain confident -- and having gone there to our bases last week, even more confident -- in the safety, reliability, and effectiveness of the nuclear mission," she said.
The cheating was discovered when criminal investigators looking into illegal drug possession among missile launch officers stumbled upon evidence of cheating on a monthly proficiency test at the Montana base.
The investigators found one officer had the answers to a monthly proficiency test on his mobile phone and had sent them to his fellow crew members.
James said the illicit drug case has also widened and now two more officers have been implicated, bringing the total to 13 airmen tied to the probe.
Since the end of the Cold War, which reduced the perceived relevance of the force, the Pentagon has worried about the morale and professionalism of the officers who oversee the land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
With 450 ICBMs at three bases in Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming, more than 500 officers manage the weapons around the clock in steel cocoons 100 feet (30 meters) underground, rehearsing launch protocols in often tedious routines.
James said she held confidential discussions with small "focus groups" of airmen at the missile bases this month and came away persuaded that changes were needed in how personnel are managed and promoted.
She said frequent exams are the overriding criteria that determine promotion, and as a result launch officers are fixated with scoring perfect grades as anything less than 100 percent can derail a career.
"I heard repeatedly from teammates that the need for perfection has created a climate of undue stress and fear," she said.
"Fear about the future. Fear about promotions. Fear about what will happen to them in their careers."
She said members of the nuclear missile force have doubts about their career prospects and some question if the Pentagon genuinely values their mission.

Web gets new domain addresses like .guru, and .bike..........

WASHINGTON: The humble .com is set to receive some competition from a new set of unusual web addresses such as .guru and .singles!
Internet users will now be able to register in targeted and specific domains ending in .guru, .bike, .singles, .plumbing and .clothing among others as a US company is offering a wave of new Web addresses.
Donuts Inc will kick off the general availability period for seven new Internet domain names, marking the beginning of a new era for the Internet in which users will have unprecedented choice in how they identify and brand themselves online.
The new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) -- the first of hundreds Donuts will launch this year -- are .bike, .clothing, .guru, .holdings, .plumbing, .singles, and .ventures, the company said.
Anyone can register names in these gTLDs on a first come, first-served basis from accredited registrars worldwide.
According to the company on February 5, .camera, .equipment, .estate, .gallery, .graphics, .lighting and .photography will be open for registration by anyone interested in an online identity connected to these terms.
"Starting this week, new, relevant and specific Internet naming options will be available on a scale never before seen," Donuts co-founder and CEO Paul Stahura said.
"This is a unique opportunity for businesses, brands, organisations, and individuals to find an online identity that speaks precisely to their products, services and interests," Stahura said.
In addition to this launch, Donuts hit another major milestone when it signed its 105th new gTLD contract with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ( ICANN).
"We have ambitious goals as part of our commitment to leading the development and innovation of the new gTLD marketplace," said company co-founder and Executive Vice President Jonathon Nevett.

Google Q4 earnings up 17% despite fall in ad rates...

SAN FRANCISCO: Google's fourth-quarter earnings rose 17% even though a long-running slump in its online ad prices deepened.

The performance indicates that Google is still struggling to close the gap between the rates for ads shown on mobile devices and those on personal computers.

Advertisers haven't been willing to pay as much to reach prospective customers on the smaller screens of smartphones and tablets, but Google has been tweaking its digital marketing system so mobile and PC ad campaigns are bundled together. In doing so, Google is hoping advertisers eventually will recognize the advantages of reaching people on the go and gradually begin to pay higher prices for mobile marketing pitches.

But Google's average ad price during the fourth quarter fell 11% from the previous year. That was the steepest quarterly drop in 2013. It marked the ninth consecutive quarter that Google's average ad rate, also known as "cost per click," has fallen from the previous year.

Google earned $3.4 billion, or $9.90 per share, in the October-December period. That compares with $2.9 billion, or $8.62 per share, in the prior year.

Excluding costs to cover employees' stock compensation, Google said it earned $12.01 per share. That was slightly below the average estimate of $12.22 per share among analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue rose 17% to $16.9 billion.

After subtracting Google's ad commissions, revenue stood at $13.5 billion, in line with analyst projections.

Google's stock edged up $1.61 to $1,137 in extended trading.

Satya Nadella likely to be next Microsoft CEO!!!

NEW DELHI: Senior Microsoft executive Satya Nadella would replace Steve Ballmer as Microsoft CEO, two media reports said today, citing sources familiar with the processes of selecting the new leader at the Redmond-based company.

Bloomberg reported that the Microsoft board was set to name Nadella, an Indian who was born in Hyderabad and who completed his engineering from Manipal University before heading to the US for higher studies, as the company's next CEO. The report also said that the board was discussing replacing Bill Gates as chairman.

The Bloomberg report came several hours after Kara Swisher, who has a fairly reliable record of breaking stories, wrote on technology website Re/code that Microsoft has apparently finalized Nadella as the next CEO of the company. Swisher wrote that a formal announcement was expected within a week.

World-- Features of Pakistani genuine currency match with fake notes circulated in India!!

For first time scientifically nailing Pakistan in circulating Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICNs) here, a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has concluded that the qualities and features of genuine Pakistani currency note printed in its government press matched with that of FICNs recovered here all over the country.

On the basis of NIA probe, a Mumbai court on Wednesday convicted six accused who were found to be circulating FICNs in India. It is the first conviction in a FICN case anywhere in the country under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, which is basically an anti-terror legal framework.

During the probe we got samples of FICNs seized in
Chandigarh, Chitradurga in Karnataka, Kashmir, Thane in Maharashtra, Badwani in Madhya Pradesh, Goa and even fake notes recovered from a currency chest in Kochi and submitted them to the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL) for an expert opinion. The opinion was startling,” said a NIA investigators requesting anonymity.

The SPMCIL expert report opined the FICNs and Pakistani currency note have most of the pivotal parameters – like density of paper, wax pick quotient, poly vinyl alcohol, PH value – similar to each other and that led to a conclusion that Pakistani government presses are printing FICNs.

Some of the FICN recoveries were made from Pakistani terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, indicating a terror angle.

The present case, supervised by NIA DIG Sajid Farid Shapoo, was originally busted by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad in June 2009 with the recovery of FICNs to the tune of around Rs. 4 lakh. But due to its national and international ramification the probe was handed over to the NIA by the Union home ministry.

Points to note:
-Wax pick quotient of FICNs and Pakistani note is 18A
-PH value is also same, to tune of 5 to 5.5
-Surface sizing is similar
-Even the security thread was also present, which appeared to be inserted at the time of prining
-Experts said similar manufacturing process was used for FICN and Pak currency notes
-The sophistication in FICN can only come through a government press

Sorry Suzuki, but you got it wrong again!!!

In the last 18 months, Osamu Suzuki, the chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation that owns India’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, has been a regular visitor to India. He makes it a point to attend almost all of company’s board meetings (around 6 every year), and is a routine visitor to the firm’s Annual General shareholder’s Meeting generally held in September.

It would appear normal for the owner of a company to make this many visits to its most important subsidiary but in Suzuki’s case it has not always been like that. Till 2009, he was more bothered about Suzuki’s growth in bigger markets like Japan and US and while he understood the importance of Maruti, it did not occupy a significant portion of his mindspace.
The change in attitude is attributed largely to Suzuki’s weakening command in global markets like Europe and US and the coming of age of India and with it Maruti as a new frontier for automobiles. As a result, Maruti not only became the Japanese firm’s most fledgling arm–superseding its own standing in Japan– but in the last 3-4 years, it has also became a veritable cash cow.
The sluggishness in the Indian automobile market in the last 2 years has taken some sheen off that story. That has made Suzuki anxious. Labour strikes at the company’s Manesar factories in 2011 followed by an violent repetition in 2012 has forced him to take matters into his own hands.
The decision to steal the Gujarat project, where Maruti was working on building a factory of the same size as Gurgaon and Manesar put together, and put it under its own fold in a 100% owned Suzuki subsidiary however, was uncalled for. The company was at pains on Tuesday to explain the financial benefits of it.

The subsidiary–Suzuki Motor Gujarat Pvt Ltd–would come into force by April 2014 and come 2018 manufacture cars only for Maruti. The latter would not need to spend on building the factory whose cost would be Rs 3000 crore initially but at the same time it would not have any say on how the factory is being run.

Bollywood Box Office-- Jai Ho unlikely to break records, yet to make Rs 100 crore!!!

It stars superstar Salman Khan and has masala aplenty — but Jai Ho could manage barely over Rs 70 crore in earnings during its first weekend at the domestic box office.

Trade experts say in comparison to the star's previous films, this won't create any fireworks in terms of records.

After the first weekend the collection of the film stands at Rs 70.18 crore

Reportedly made on a budget of Rs 75 crore, Jai Ho hit about 4,500 screens in India last Friday. Salman Khan says that he is ready to take the blame for his film not getting the expected big opening at the box office.

Jai Ho, the first big-budget release of 2014, could not get a bumper start unlike the recent Salman Khan-starrers such as 'Wanted', 'Bodyguard' and 'Dabangg'.

The Sohail Khan-directed film earned Rs 17 crore on the opening day. "The overall collections of the film matter.

I am not affected by the figures of my film. If the film gets a good opening, it's good. If it doesn't, nobody has failed but me.

I could not give the reason for people to perhaps see the film. No one can predict the collections of a film. We have made a beautiful and a good film. It is entertaining film with a dose of action and it also gives a good message," Salman said at an event. "Perhaps I have failed in bringing in the people.

We tried to do something different and may be people did not want to see the film as they expected to see a 'Dabangg','Bodyguard' kind of a film.

They wanted to enjoy. Some people understood that this is not that kind of film and that it is a serious film," he said.

"We are also confused with the reaction we are getting from theatres and the collections are not matching up. It is strange combination," Salman said.

The Indian equity markets continued to fall further in mid-morning trade, marking their lowest intraday level since November 27 on risk-off mood in emerging markets.

Strains in emerging markets returned with a vengeance and the US.Federal Reserve further scaled back its stimulus, sending investors scurrying to safety in bonds and yen. The Bank Nifty fell as much as 2 percent to its lowest since October, heading towards a sixth consecutive losing session.

At 11:55 am, the BSE Sensex was down 200 points at 20445, while the Nifty was down 62 points at 6057.

Even the rupee was trading lower at 62.72 against the US dollar in line with weakness seen in other emerging market currencies.

According to John Woods, MD and Chief Investment Strategist, APAC, Citi, the Indian equity markets could head to August lows if the pressure on emerging markets continue.

"Investors should brace up for correction as this crisis unfolds," he told CNBC- TV18 in an interview.

He sees the Sensex finding support at 18,000 levels Sesa Sterlite, BHEL, Tata Steel, Hero Motocorp and Hindalco are top losers in the Sensex.

Led by good results, Bharti Airtel is still leading the gainers, followed by GAIL, Tata Motors and M&M.

ICICI Bank slumped 2.3 percent, and HDFC Bank fell 1.2 percent.

Titan  was down nearly 1 percent after the company's December-quarter earnings lagged some analysts estimates, dealers say.

Health-- Five Signs of Senior Stress!!

Stress can present itself in various ways. Here are five of the most common ways to detect if a loved one’s stress is cause for concern:
  1. Changes in eating habits, such as over-eating or loss of appetite, can be caused by overwhelming stress.
  2. Mood swings due to stress may present in increased irritability, general sadness or depression.
  3. Memory issues may arise in the form of increased forgetfulness of names, places or other things that normally come naturally. Lack of concentration may become a problem. Some seniors may exercise poor judgment, such as excessive spending when they are already on a limited budget.
  4. Physical signs of stress can include body aches and pains or increased episodes of illness. Changes in sleeping patterns — either trouble falling asleep or interrupted nighttime sleep — can signal significant stress.
  5. Seniors experiencing overwhelming stress often isolate themselves from others, refusing to socialize or participate in activities they used to enjoy.

Family caregivers of seniors should be cognizant of stress as it relates to their loved ones. Knowing the signs and detecting them early on can help seniors learn to recognize stress factors and to take steps to alleviate the effects stress can cause.

Activities such as yoga, walking and other physical exercises designed for seniors are great tension relievers. Many seniors enjoy the benefits of tai chi classes geared to their physical abilities. The Mayo Clinic supports this gentle form of martial arts as a way to relieve stress and help other health-related conditions.

Some seniors are unable to participate in physical activities, but there are other ways to reduce stress. Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and getting a good night’s sleep can keep stress at bay. Joining a non-physical group activity, such as a bridge club or volunteering, offers socialization and a chance to clear the mind of daily responsibilities. There are also local agencies that can help with tasks that might cause undue stress for seniors.

Respite care organizations can help with housework or grocery shopping. Religious organizations often have groups who can assist seniors with yard work or other strenuous tasks around the home.

Indian-origin woman held, charged in London anti-terror operation!!!

A 36-year-old woman of Indian-origin was arrested and charged with attempted murder by the counter-terrorism command wing of the Metropolitan Police in London.
Kuntal Patel, who works for the Barclays Bank in Canary Wharf, was arrested on Sunday under the Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act, 2001, and was charged on Wednesday night following an intelligence-led operation that included searches at three addresses in London.
"Kuntal Patel…has tonight been charged with attempted murder following an investigation by the Counter-terrorism Command. She is due to appear in custody at Westminster magistrates court tomorrow, Thursday, 30 January," the police said in a statement.
Kuntal is the daughter of Meena Patel, who sits on the bench at the Thames magistrates court. This is one of rare instances when a woman of Indian origin has been arrested and charged under Britain's anti-terrorism laws.
Kuntal's arrest and questioning at an east London police station was preceded by the operation that included a search of Patel's house in Stratford, the police said.
Her house on Park Road is located near Olympic Park, the venue of 2012 London Olympics.
According to local councillor Ron Manley, who has reportedly known the Patels for more than 20 years: "They are a very upstanding family. Meena is a magistrate and used to work for a local authority, Kuntal works in the city and her younger daughter Poonam is a pharmacist".
"They are a Hindu family and I've known the two girls since they were at primary school. They have always been very polite, very nice girls," he told the local media.

Kuntal was the second person to be arrested in the operation.
The first arrest was that of a 19-year-old son of Nicholas Sutcliffe, a senior diplomat at the Foreign Office.
The young man has since been released and will face no further action, the police said.

Tata Opportunities Fund to invest $60 million in Varroc group!!!

MUMBAI: Local private equity fund Tata Opportunities Fund will purchase a significant minority stake in Aurangabad-based auto component maker Varroc group for $60 million, or Rs 272 crore, two people with direct knowledge of the development said.

India's third-largest auto components maker will use the money to build new products and to expand its presence in Europe and emerging markets. "Tata Opportunities Fund is investing $60 million in Varroc for a substantial minority stake,"  .. an investment banker with knowledge of the development said.

According to him, the company with sales of more than Rs 800 crore is also looking at widening its customer base to Europe and other emerging markets.

Promoted by first generation entrepreneur Tarang Jain, Varroc began selling auto components to Bajaj Group in late 90s and later to other vehicle makers. "Based on further capital requirement, the company might look at another round of fund raising in future," another person with knowledge of company's plans said.

Varroc group managing director Tarang Jain and Tata Opportunities Fund spokesman Rishaad Bilimoria didn't respond to email questionnaire.
Varroc had grown through acquisitions in the global market. In 2012, it acquired US-based Visteon Lighting for $100 million, helping it to ramp up its presence in Mexico and Chezch Republic.

"Some capital will go towards expanding the Visteon business," the banker quoted above said. Visteon supplies products to global automobile majors such as Ford, General Motors, Volkswagen and Jaguar Land Rover.

Google sells Motorola to Lenovo for $2.9 bn, after paying $12.5 bn to buy it !!!

SAN FRANCISCO: Larry Page, Google's co-founder and chief executive, likes to talk about "big bets" and "moonshots." But the thing about moonshots is that they can crash to Earth.

That appears to be what happened to Motorola Mobility, the cellphone maker owned by Google. The Internet giant announced Wednesday that it would sell Motorola to Lenovo for $2.91 billion, less than two years after paying $12.5 billion to acquire it.

Motorola was Google's biggest acquisition by  ..

Motorola was Google's biggest acquisition by far and was hailed by the company as an example of the big bets Page was unafraid to make. Yet Motorola has continued to bleed money, aggravating shareholders and stock analysts, and its new flagship phone, the Moto X, did not sell as well as expected.

The deal is not a total financial loss for the extremely wealthy Google. In addition to keeping billions of dollars' worth of patents, Google essentially turned Lenovo into a factory for its  .. Android operating system and also picked up some cash.

Still, it is a sign of the fits and starts the company is experiencing as it navigates business in the mobile age, which has upended technology companies of all types.

In addition to using Motorola's patents to defend itself in the mobile patent wars, Google pledged to reinvent mobile hardware with Motorola's new phones and directly compete with Apple by owning both mobile hardware and software.

Politics-- Gujarat riots: NC, NCP differ with Congress, ask it to respect court order

New Delhi: With poll after opinion poll suggesting that the country is rooting for Narendra Modi as prime minister this time, parties on the other side of the political spectrum seem to be warming up to the taste of 'NaMo tea'.

While it is obvious that parties tend to gravitate to the side that appears the fittest to be closet to the trophy, the shake up in the UPA this early into the poll season would be a cause of worry for the Congress given its renewed focus on getting its act together before the General Election, likely to be held in May-June.

First came National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah's 'candid' admission of the reality of India's democratic system. The union minister said at it was in the hands of voters to decide whether Narendra Modi should be the prime minister or not.

While there was nothing inherently wrong in what he said, but when his comments are viewed in the backdrop of the growing tension between his party and the Congress – they run a coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir – questions are bound to be raised on the changing political realities. Farooq Abdullah's son and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah added fuel to the fire by saying that his party may be willing to go it alone in the state.

Farooq Abdullah's statement needs scrutiny also because he had, as recently as October last year, said that Narendra Modi as Prime Minister will be "dangerous and damaging" for the nation's secular ethos.

"National Conference (NC) has nothing to do with either Modi or BJP or Sangh (Parivar). We want to stay far and would not get into any agreements with them. That (Modi as PM) will be dangerous and damaging for the Indian secular ethos," Abdullah had said.

Even before Congress could analyse NC's changing position vis-a-vis Narendra Modi came a bigger whammy from its old ally the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

The NCP, which shares power with the Congress in Maharashtra, has been a loyal ally of the Congress despite the very public dream of party boss Sharad Pawar to be prime minister of the country.

Pawar, one of the most astute politicians in the country, is known to have the knack to judge the directions of the wind much before others sense it.

And today his trusted lieutenant Praful Patel, who is also a union minister, created a flutter by asserting that the time has come to lay the 2002 Gujarat riots issue to rest.

India, Australia to launch robotic floats to study 'what makes Indian Ocean tick'!!

CHENNAI: India has joined hands with Australiato learn 'what makes the Indian Ocean tick' and how both countries can benefit from it. Researchers from the two countries will launchrobotic floats, armed with sensors, in the Indian Ocean in mid 2014 to get data which would help them predict the ocean's impact on regional climate and weather patterns and effectively manage resources.

The Bio Argo floats are expected to enhance the successful Argo float technology to measure large-scale changes in the chemistry and biology of marine ecosystems below the ocean's surface. This is expected to give researchers a greater understanding of the physical and biological drivers behind the Indian Ocean.

The Argo floats are a network of 3,600 free-floating sensors, operating in open ocean areas to provide real-time data on ocean temperature and salinity.

The floats will have additional sensors for dissolved oxygen, nitrate, chlorophyll, dissolved organic matter and particle scattering. They would target specific gaps in researchers' understanding of Indian Ocean ecosystems of immediate concern to India and Australia, such as the Bay of Bengal and the waters of north Western Australia, a release from the Australian High Commission said.
