After Bangalore, netizens in Mumbai could soon be able to conveniently access Wi-Fi in public places too. Though not free, MTNL plans to launch affordable Wi-Fi facilities at public places such as airports, railway stations, malls, hotels and the upcoming Metro stations, reports ToI.
Looks like, MTNL is all geared up to embrace the new mobile era. It recently launched free roaming services for incoming calls in Delhi and Mumbai, which will be effective from tomorrow. While launching the “free roaming”, Union minister for communication & IT Kapil Sibal said, “This is the era of digital data revolution and people want value-added services, voice telephony, etc. Smartphones will have an important role to play in the country’s economy.”
MTNL’s executive director Peeyush Agrawal reportedly said that the telco plans to bring affordable Wi-Fi plans across Mumbai within nine months. He said, “We will tie up with coffee houses, restaurants, hotels, food courts in malls, airports and stations. The Wi-Fi will be completely secured. We will follow all norms to ensure data protection. We plan to introduce unlimited downloads for as low as Rs 50 a month. The pricing is still being worked out.”
MTNL also plans to increase its Wi-Fi customer base by about 2 lakh. However, one of the major issues that its facing is cable theft, that eventually makes numerous landlines go”dead”. Agrawal further said, “We have introduced a cable theft circuit system. The moment anyone cuts off or tries to steal a cable, the system activates the circuit and rings an alarm at our control room. We can nab the culprit in minutes.”
Talking about Wi-Fi, Bangalore has become the first Indian city to offer free Wi-Fi hotspots to its citizens. The facility dubbed Namma Wi-Fi (802.11N) will now allow citizens to use smart-phones, tablets, net-books, laptops and other mobile devices to connect to internet seamlessly when they are around M.G. Road and Brigade Road in downtown or at Shantinagar or Yeshwantpur bus terminals and at upscale Indiranagar in the city’s eastern suburb.
