India- Airlines slash domestic route fares by 30%...

MUMBAI: Offering a second round of discounts on domestic air tickets for pre-summer travel, three airlines on Friday slashed the 30-day advance purchase fares by about 30%.

On Friday morning, Spice Jet brought back the 30-day advance purchase offer on tickets for travel up to mid-April; this was soon followed by IndiGo with a similar offer. Jet Airways joined in the evening, offering a discount of 30% on base fare plus fuel surcharge.

Vikram Malhi of Expedia said that since morning, they had seen a surge of 150% in bookings. "A Delhi-Mumbai fare that would cost Rs 10,098 on last minute purchase can be purchased for Rs 3,617, including tax, under the present offer.

These offers are a win-win for customers as well as airlines since it leads to significant demand stimulation, reducing wastage of seats for airlines that would otherwise fly empty flights during lean season, and flyers too get to enjoy deeply discounted fares," Malhi said.

"Also, by selling some percentage inventory at discounted prices during the lean season, airlines are in a better position to assess their booking and load factor plans for the holiday season," he added.
