- Work Hard
If you are a patrol officer, chances are you and your peers are all working towards making detective. I was told once by a mentor that was much older and wiser than I am, that the best thing that I could do to get promoted was to simply do the best job in the position I was currently in. That makes sense to me now. Be the hardest worker on your shift, don’t complain, get along with people, and learn communication skills. Employers want hard working, dedicated, good spirited troops
- Study for the Exam
If your agency gives a detective test, I recommend that you study for it continually, even when there may not be any available openings. Always be prepared to take it and you will score high.
- Continuing Education
Request to go to as many schools dealing with investigations as possible. Every little advantage you can get over your competition will be a plus. Also, if you don’t have any college hours, why not start now, while you are working towards that promotion. It’s never too late to earn that degree, and you will be glad you did when you look back over your career.
- Stay Out of Trouble
Work hard, but make good choices, both on and off duty. Keep a good balance of work and play
- Make Solid, Good Arrests
When you make arrest out on the street, make sure that your reports are clear and concise and meet all the elements of the offense. Use your spell check. Remember, the division that will promote you is reading and reviewing your current reports, and they will want detectives with intelligence, that can read and write properly, and know how to enforce the law and file a good case.
Hopefully following these tips will help you on your way to the investigative division in your department.
