Safety Tips For You and Your Family- Detectives Team

General Safety Tips

•If you feel uncomfortable about a person or situation, walk away immediately.

•Do not leave your name on your outgoing answering machine/voicemail message. Make sure that someone always knows where you are.

•Consider carrying spare cash or a second wallet when venturing into an unfamiliar area. You can use this to pay off an assailant without losing anything of value.

•Leave non-essential credit cards at home and never flash your cash.

•Be wary of giving money to beggars. Professional criminals watch where you keep your money and then pickpocket you later.

•Try not to carry a purse. If you must carry a purse, hang it diagonally across your body and hold it at all times with one arm. If you are attacked for your purse, give it up immediately.

•If you suspect foul play, do not attempt to intervene yourself. Go and get help.

•If you are the victim of foul play, cooperate with your attacker and remember as many details as possible. (Visit here for more tips on what to do if you witness a crime.)

Outdoor Exercise Tips

• Exercise in familiar, populated areas and vary your routine.

• Don't wear expensive jewelry or carry a lot of cash.

• If possible, exercise with a partner or a dog.

• Try not to wear headphones — they will impair your ability to hear an attacker..

• Bring some form of identification with you. If you have no place to carry it, write your        name, emergency contact and medical information in your shoe or on an article of                clothing.

• If asked for directions, be sure to stand a full arm's length away from the car.

• If you think you are being followed, head for the nearest open business.

• Always have your door key ready before you reach your door.

India and Israel bond with technology, innovation !!

India will showcase its technology capabilities in Israel in May as relations between the two countries are getting redefined with enhanced cooperation based on innovation in high-tech, IT, biomed, energy and cyber security.

India will participate in the First Innovation Conference in Israel, MIXiii 2014, that will take place at the Tel Aviv Fairgrounds May 20-22. The conference aims to introduce participants to the broad spectrum of activities and ecosystem that make Israel one of the largest global innovation hubs.

There is excellent cutting-edge technology to be found in Israel, government and company officials here say. The government has already registered at MIXiii 2014 and would take delegations from the country to showcase India's capabilities.

"Israel is the epicentre of world innovation right now," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland, last month in a speech that focussed on Israel as a hub for innovation as well as research and development.

"This is an invitation to an innovation nation, it's open for business, it's open for your business, please come join us," he said, citing interesting examples of Israeli innovation -- how scarce water resources has inspired Israelis to develop the world's most advance technologies for re-using water, and how scarce agricultural land has inspired them to learn how to get more milk out of every cow.

Last May, Israel hosted a summit that highlighted the role innovation can play in helping Asian countries cope with critical demographic, social, technological and environmental problems.

"Israel and India are existential partners," Israel's Ambassador to India Alon Ushpiz told news agency  editors in a chat at the agency office. "There are many joint values and joint interests on the basis of which the relationship can become a truly strategic one.

"The possibilities for cooperation are limitless."

Since full diplomatic relations between Israel and India were established in 1992, the two countries have moved significantly closer, largely on the basis of growing sales by Israel's defence industry to India. India is the largest customer of Israeli military equipment and Israel is the second largest military partner of India after Russia.

But technology collaborations in newer, diverse sectors such as water, solar, agriculture and biotech are quickening the strategic dialogue and interactions that have moved from relative obscurity to the centre of India's foreign policy agenda. Officials from both sides say Israeli-Indian cooperation is now poised for dramatic boosts.

In the past, the connections between Israel and India were made by American companies. They come to Israel to buy some technology and then move the production to India. Now there is a realization on both sides that they should come together directly and not through third party.

India and Israel have set up a USD 40 million fund to leverage innovation for economic collaboration through jointly developed technologies or joint collaborations. The fund would help Israeli companies participate in large Indian government-led ventures, foster collaboration of Israeli and Indian companies in R&D projects and seek to adapt products developed in Israel for the Indian market.

Also spurring the two democracies are a growing consensus on security, emerging threats and expanding agenda of shared regional interests.

"Israel and India are both facing similar challenges regarding prevention of terror threats, the defence of national borders, and internal security. The operational capacity of Israeli technologies meets India's needs," said Brig. Gen. (IAF, Res.) Shmaya Avieli, director of SIBAT, the International Defense Cooperation Division of the Israel Ministry of Defense (IMOD).

Earlier this month, 21 Israeli defence companies presented their cutting-edge solutions at the Defence Expo-2014 in New Delhi.

"Israel considers India as a partner and ally in the Global War on Terrorism. The prevention of terror in India contributes to the stability of both countries, and this partnership is important for the ongoing defence of the two democracies," said Avieli.

Both countries will work jointly to sharpen their expertise in the application of ground surveillance radar systems. Hyderabad-based Electronics Corporation of India and Israeli conglomerate Elbit Systems signed a letter of intent at the Defexpo.

Meeting Indian businessmen last October, President Shimon Peres focussed on cultural ties and said India could be of help in alleviating some of the tensions of the Middle East by introducing Arab societies to science and technology, and telling them how to escape poverty.

One area that is gaining attraction is homeland security. Given India's growing economy and huge population, there is room for greater cooperation.
in November last year, home ministers of the two countries discussed inter-agency collaboration at what Uspiz said was a "great meeting".

India is surrounded by countries, individuals, groups, and perhaps even governments hostile to it. Cyber attacks have been mounted against networks throughout the country. Cyber crime is also a growing problem, with many online businesses lacking the necessary software to protect their systems.

According to the IVC business data firm, there are 224 cyber security companies in Israel. India needs sophisticated technology to protect networks, databases, and enterprise computer systems. Recently Israel successfully fought off a major distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack by hacktivist group Anonymous.

In 2012, the two countries agreed to a programme to promote joint research with regard to cyber security.

Trade and industry experts say the nature of relations is also shifting from a buyer-seller one to technology transfer and collaboration. India is buying Israeli companies and establishing more joint ventures between the nations. Jain Irrigation Systems recently bought the drip irrigation company Naan-Dan that had been run by kibbutzims in Israel.

Because of the small Israeli market, officials say, there is not much of a traditional trade relationship. But that could change. The two countries are negotiating a free trade agreement, which Uspiz said, could be a "strategic game changer", expanding the scope and volume of trade two to three times over three to four years.

And the trigger would be technology. "The economic potential, especially in the high-tech sector, is huge," Ayal Moskal, Israel country manager of Tata Consultancy Services, said after a Track-II conference organised by the Aspen Institute of India and Tel Aviv University last October.

"If we join forces, we can conquer the economic world," Moscal said, pointing to the direction the relationship is moving.

China overtakes India as top gold consumer

China overtook India as the world’s largest gold consumer for the first time in 2013, according to official data made public Sunday. China’s gold consumption hit 1,176 tonnes in 2013, up 41.4 percent, as declining gold prices enticed buying, Xinhua reported Sunday citing the ministry of information and technology.

Gold prices fell 26 percent last year, it said. China was the world’s no.1 gold producer last year for the seventh consecutive year. Production rose 6.2 percent to reach 428 tonnes, nearly 15 percent of the world’s total production.

Apple, Samsung, Sony join hands to fight online discounts

India's retail trade may be having an Amazon moment. Earlier this month, senior officials of three global handset makers met to try and figure out what to do about cutthroat online pricing.

Of course, what they see as a menace is great for consumers who're flocking to e-commerce marketplaces such as Flipkart, Amazon India and Snapdeal to find the lowest price for the electronic gadget they want. But the fact that representatives of three companies, normally battling against each other fiercely in the marketplace, came together on this issue is a reflection of how badly the traditional retail channels are getting hit.

This is somewhat analogous to what happened to traditional book trade in the US once Amazon became a force to reckon with. The companies are looking to fight back against what they see as pricing distortions and brand damage inflicted by the discounting marketplaces. Companies like Sony, Apple, Canon, Nokia and Samsung are planning to clamp down on distribution to sellers in popular online marketplaces and issue customer advisories not to buy from e-commerce portals as they are not authorized trade partners.
Herculean task ahead
Such products could even be fake and hence lead to problems with warranty support. While this may temporarily reduce the plethora of online deals, consumer electronic and mobile phone makers acknowledged that preventing such discounted sales across all online stores may be tough, since control of distribution is a Herculean task at a time when the market itself is down and in the absence of any predatory pricing laws in the country.

"True, there is no easy solution since monitoring a retail universe of more than two lakh sellers across online and offline to keep track of who is selling at disruptive pricing is a big task in itself. But still, a beginning needs to be made," said a senior official with a leading mobile phone maker.

The issue has hit almost every manufacturer and retailers are getting increasingly frustrated at losing sales to e-commerce portals, which are passing on the 8-10% margin that manufacturers offer the trade.

E-commerce also happens to be at that stage of evolution where acquiring customers is critical, which means offering the lowest price, even to the extent of making a loss, makes eminent sense for them.

Additional spectrum: Hearing against Mittal, Ruia on April 4

The hearing in the additional spectrum case, in which Bharti Cellular CMD Sunil Mittal, Essar Group promoter Ravi Ruia and others have been summoned as accused, was today fixed for April 4 by a Delhi court.
Special CBI Judge O.P. Saini adjourned Thursday’s proceedings after advocate Siddharth Agarwal, appearing for Mr. Mittal, said the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear in March the separate pleas filed by Mr. Mittal and Mr. Ruia challenging the March 19, 2013 order of the trial court summoning them as accused in the case.
“The Supreme Court had said that the matter will be listed somewhere in March,” Mr. Agarwal told the court after which the case was listed for April 4.
The apex court, in its April 26 last year interim order, had said that hearing against Mr. Mittal and Mr. Ruia will remain “postponed” in the trial court until further orders.
Mr. Mittal did not appear in the court on Thursday while Mr. Ruia, former Telecom Secretary Shyamal Ghosh, who is also an accused in the case, was present.
Mr. Mittal, Mr. Ruia and Canada-based NRI Asim Ghosh, who was then a Managing Director of accused firm Hutchison Max Telecom Pvt Ltd, were summoned as accused by the trial court. The summons to Asim Ghosh have not been served yet.

Bharti Airtel set to acquire Loop Mobile for $113M..

India’s largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel Ltd is set to acquire Loop Mobile in Rs 700 crore ($113.4 million) deal that may be announced this week, as per several news reports citing sources. Loop is currently controlled by Dubai-based Khaitan family.
The acquisition will bring Loop's 3.2 million subscribers besides around telecom 400 towers in Mumbai under Airtel, making it the top player in India’s financial capital. Loop also enjoys much higher average revenue per user with a third of them being post-paid customers, which makes it an attractive target for Airtel.
Loop Mobile has a debt of Rs 400 crore, which is likely to be included in the final transaction. It was the first operator in the country to launch GPRS, caller tunes, intelligent network for prepaid, roaming on prepaid, missed call alert, etc.
The deal would come soon after Airtel committed to shell out Rs 18,530 crore in the just-concluded spectrum auctions.
Loop’s licence is to expire in September 2014 and the firm did not bid in the spectrum auction. Loop holds 8 Mhz of airwave frequency in 900 Mhz band. The deal is seen as a move to acquire customers besides the telecom towers.
The deal would not go ahead immediately, however, as the mandatory norms for such intra-circle M&A between telecom operators is not in place yet. The deal would be pending till the required changes are made by the government.

Indian shares end higher; banks, metals lead..

Indian shares rose to a three-week high on Tuesday, with banks extending gains on the government's budget commitment to maintaining fiscal deficit, while firm global prices lifted metal stocks.
Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram stuck to the expected lines in his interim budget on Monday, delivering on his fiscal deficit targets by containing expenditure, but it lacked any major policy announcements and limited itself to tax sops for some industries.
The general elections due in April-May will be the next big trigger for the markets to take any fresh calls on stocks and sectors, an analyst said.
"There won't be any significant events. We expect markets to trade range-bound with a positive bias," said Suresh Parmar, head of institutional equities at KJMC Capital Markets.
The Nifty index is expected to trade between 6,000 and 6300 in the short-term, Parmar added.

The benchmark BSE index closed 0.83 percent higher at 20,634.21, while the broader NSE index closed 0.89 percent higher at 6,127.10. Both were their highest close since Jan. 29.

World Of Cricket-- India beat Scotland in U-19 World Cup

India survived a scare from minnows Scotland as Sarfaraz Khan eventually bailed out the defending champions to win the Group A match by five wickets in the ICC Under-19 World Cup here Monday.
Electing to bat first, Scotland could not put up against the Indian spinners and were bowled out for 88 runs in only 29.4 overs. Man of the match Kuldeep Yadav (4/28) clinched a hat-trick to set an easy target for the Indian batsman at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
However, the Indian chase suffered a huge jolt at the start when they tottered at 22/5. But Sarfaraz's unbeaten 45 and Deepak Hooda (25 not out) saw India through to the end and the Asian team won the match in 22.3 overs.
Scotland's decision to bat first did not turn out the way they wanted it with only opener Andrew Umeed (44) showing any kind of resistance. The Scottish batsman had nothing much to talk about as Gavin Main (16) was the only other batsman to reach double figures apart from Umeed.
Pacers Chama Milind (1/16) and Avesh Khan (1/14) kept their line and length to pick up a wicket apiece in five overs each. But the main job was done by the spinners Yadav and off break bowler Aamir Gani.
Left arm chinaman bowler Yadav (4/28) became the first Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in the U-19 World Cup when he scalped Nick Farrar (0), Kyle Stirling (0) and wicketkeeper batsman Alex Baum (5). Later on, he also went on to pick up the wicket of Mark Watt (0).
Gani, on the other hand, displayed his skills to notch 4/28 in 9.4 overs, finishing off the Scottish innings.
Chasing a measly target of 89, the Indian top five perished for single digits including skipper Vijay Zol (4) as India was tottering at 22/5. But Khan and Hooda struck the all important 70-run sixth wicket partnership to take the defending champions home.
Hooda scored two fours and gave good support to Khan, who hit five boundaries and a six in his 51 ball innings.
India now sit atop Group A with four points from two wins in two matches and play their last league match against Papua New Guinea Feb 19 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
